Klamloops - Kelowna, BC

Departed Valemount, BC area on August 11 and headed to Kamloops / Kelowna, BC.  This area is known for their fruits and vegetables.  

Driving south on Route 5, Rockies are still to our left.

Kamloops, BC - Population 86,000 and founded in 1812 as a North West Co. depot.  During the 1860's gold rushers reached the city via the Thompson River.  The region is known for cattle and sheep ranching, forestry, lumber and more recent for tourism.

The city has a nice walking tour.  This church (St. Andrew's Presbyterian) is the oldest public building remaining in the city, built 1887.

After a few days in Klamloops we continued on to the Vernon - Kelowna area.

In Vernon we hiked to BX Falls along the BX Creek Trail.

Myra Canyon Trestles - built between 1912 & 1914 routed the railway through this canyon. This 7 mile (12 km) railroad bed is now a walking / biking path.  It has 18 trestles and two tunnels.  train usage was discontinued in 1973.  KVR Chief Engineer Andrew McCulloch was the gentleman who lead this major feat.  This area is maintained by volunteers and managed by the BC Parks.

Yes, we actually stayed on a working vegetable farm, 2nd generation.  They offer 9 sites with full service but have no public bath / restroom facilities.  Site was lined with Walnut trees and very private.  We were able to buy fresh vegetables from the owners.

Kelowna area was a great place to visit.
