Departed Ft. Nelson on 7/31 and drove to Dawson Creek, BC. This town is mile marker "0" for the Alaska Highway. There were adequate roads to Dawson Creek in the early 40's so the military was challenged with building a road from Dawson Creek to Big Delta, AK. The town had train service also.
Today the town is surrounded by oil and gas fracking fields. Reminded us of driving through North Dakota with all the truck traffic.

Pouce Coupe Trestle - 100% wood train bridge built in the early 30's. Town is just south of Dawson Creek. |

Kiskatinaw Bridge - one of many bridges built to support the Alcan construction. 100% wood with concrete footings, stands 100 feet high, 534 long and makes a 90 deg turn. This bridge is just north of Dawson Creek. |

Bridge is still in operation but only had a 25 ton limit. Highway was moved and new bridge constructed to support oil and gas industry in the late 70's. FYI, before the new bridge vehicles over 25 ton had to forge the river.
Pioneer Village - town has relocated numerous local homes and businesses to show area history.
